Cities on the Move
301 từ7 câu hỏi
In 1950, fewer than one in three people in the world lived in a city, but today more than half of us are urban residents. According to experts, this proportion has been rising rapidly, and it is expected to reach two thirds by the middle of the century. Many people have left the countryside in recent decades because they have been seeking better jobs, schools and hospitals. As a result, cities have expanded in every direction, and some old colonial towns have become huge modern capitals. Urbanisation has brought clear benefits, and yet it has also created serious concerns for local governments. The more people arrive, the more expensive housing becomes, so many young workers can no longer afford to rent a flat near their offices. Some families live in crowded neighbourhoods where several generations share a single room. Traffic is another problem, since more and more cars fill the streets, and the rush hour now lasts for almost three hours in some cities. Reliable public transport could reduce the pressure, but building new metro lines takes many years and a great deal of money. Unemployment has also become a worry, because the number of job seekers has grown faster than the number of vacancies. On the other hand, urban life offers leisure activities that rural areas rarely provide, such as theatres, parks and sports centres. Cities also tend to use energy more efficiently, since people live closer to their workplaces and share services. Planners now try to make cities greener, and some have already created cycle lanes and rooftop gardens. Meanwhile, the birth rate in many large cities has gradually decreased, which may slow down population growth in the future. Whether cities will become healthier and fairer places depends largely on the decisions that leaders make in the coming years.
