Small Steps to Green Living

318 từ7 câu hỏi
Household waste is one of the biggest environmental problems in modern cities, and it is growing faster than most governments can manage. Every year, millions of tonnes of packaging, leftover food and single-use plastic end up in landfills, where they may take hundreds of years to decompose. This causes pollution of soil and water, which in turn affects the health of both people and wildlife. However, ordinary families can contribute to a solution by changing a few simple habits. The first step is to reduce the amount of rubbish that we produce, for example by choosing products with less packaging. Reusable bags, bottles and food containers are cheap, and they can replace hundreds of single-use items over their lifetime. The second step is to sort waste correctly, because recycling depends on clean materials. If a plastic box is contaminated with food, the whole batch may be rejected, so it is worth rinsing out each container before you put it in the bin. Cardboard and paper should be kept dry, and glass should be separated by colour wherever your city requires it. The third step is to turn fruit peel, vegetable leftovers and garden leaves into compost. Put a layer of dry leaves in a large box, add a pile of kitchen waste, and cover it again; after a few months you will have rich soil for your plants. Many schools now take part in similar projects, which has helped students understand where their waste goes. Some people argue that these actions are too small to matter, and that only factories and governments can solve the problem. Yet when millions of households change together, the result can be a lower carbon footprint for a whole country. In the long run, green habits also save money, because we buy less and throw away less. Living green does not mean giving up comfort; it means thinking carefully about everything we use.
