Many scientists believe that human activities are the main cause of global warming, and our daily lifestyle plays a surprisingly large part in the problem. The amount of greenhouse gas that a person produces each year is called a carbon footprint. Fortunately, everybody can reduce it by adopting a few eco-friendly habits. Using household appliances more carefully is a good place to start, since electrical devices that stay on standby still waste a lot of energy. Families that choose refillable bottles instead of single-use plastic will produce much less litter. Another effective step is to use public transport, which releases far fewer emissions per passenger than private cars. Marco, a student from Brighton, says he is going to cycle to school every day this year. He expects that his decision will save him money and keep him fit. Local councils are also taking action. Next spring, the city is going to open twelve recycling centres, where residents can leave glass, paper and old batteries. Organisers hope that these centres will raise awareness of how precious our natural resources are. Some people argue that individual efforts are too small to matter. Yet sustainable change usually begins with ordinary people, and thousands of small choices will eventually make a real difference.
