In the past, many families believed that the homemaker should do all the housework while the breadwinner earned the money. Today, however, more and more parents are asking their children to take part in daily chores, and the results are encouraging. In the Nguyen family, for example, everybody follows a clear routine on weekdays. Mr Nguyen leaves for work early, so his wife prepares breakfast and does the washing-up while the children get ready for school. In the evening, the elder son takes out the rubbish and the daughter folds the laundry, while their father does the heavy lifting. At the moment, the family is preparing for a special dinner, and each person is working on a different task. Psychologists say that these shared duties bring several benefits. First, working together strengthens the bond between parents and children, who have more time to talk and laugh. Second, children who help at home learn to respect other people's efforts and to show gratitude for what they receive. Third, regular chores build good character, because they teach young people to be truthful about their mistakes and to keep their promises. When one member of the family feels tired or upset, the others can cheer him or her up by offering a helping hand. In short, sharing housework is not just about a clean home; it is a value that supports a happy family.
