Every autumn, Hanoi Secondary School holds a music competition, and this year more than sixty participants wanted to perform in front of a live audience. The judges came from a famous orchestra, so the students felt both excited and nervous. Some contestants sang pop songs, but others chose to play traditional instruments such as the bamboo clapper and the moon-shaped lute. A talented trumpet player named Khoa made the judges smile because he could play a folk melody from memory. The organisers had decorated the hall with colourful lights, yet the real attraction was the music itself. Unfortunately, the final round was delayed for twenty minutes, since a microphone stopped working. Nobody wanted to leave, so the audience clapped along while the technicians repaired it. In the end, a duo of two sisters won first prize with a song that they wrote themselves. The judges praised them for their courage to mix old melodies with modern rhythms. After the show, the school uploaded several clips to social media, and thousands of viewers left positive comments within a week. Many students said they would like to take part again next year, but they also promised to practise harder. The principal hopes the event will help young people to appreciate both local and international music.
