A Visit to a Highland Village

Last spring our class visited a highland village in Viet Nam. The village belongs to an ethnic minority group with unique features. First we looked at the wooden stilt houses standing above the ground. Next we visited the Rong house, which overlooked the terraced fields. Beside the door was a wooden statue made by local people. There, an elderly man played a bamboo flute while others played a big gong. The folk music was so lovely that we waited to listen. Our guide said that most families raise livestock, and they also do gardening. The soil on the terraced fields is good, so every harvest gives them food. After lunch, local girls showed us how they weave beautiful bags beside tall bamboo posts. Although the weaving looked difficult, they did it very quickly. Our guide wants us to keep local customs and protect the culture of the village. Next year our school may visit another minority group. Trips like this make our history lessons real and useful.
