Dear Quan, thank you for asking how my plans are going; having finished the entrance exam last week, I can finally think about my future. As you know, I am a school-leaver who has to choose between higher education and a vocational school. My parents would like me to study for a bachelor's degree at a university, because they believe that academic qualifications open more doors. Having visited three universities this month, I collected brochures about courses in economics and computer science. However, I am not sure that I am suited to a formal academic path, since I prefer learning by doing. Last Sunday I met a mechanic who completed an apprenticeship at a car factory and now earns a good salary. He regrets not having started earlier, but he says that practical skills have given him confidence. Vocational schools usually take two or three years, while a master's degree may take two more years after a bachelor's degree. A doctorate, of course, requires even more time and a strong interest in research. Money is another factor, because university fees are expensive and some families cannot afford them. On the other hand, a scholarship or part-time job can help students manage their costs. My teacher suggested that I should talk to a career adviser before making a final decision.
