By 2050, nearly seven out of ten people in the world will be city dwellers, so planners are looking for ways to make urban centres more liveable. One answer is the smart city, where sensors and digital networks help the community use energy, water and transport more efficiently. In Green Bay, a model neighbourhood in the south, residents are enjoying a very different style of life. Each high-rise building has a roof garden that supplies fresh vegetables and keeps the apartments cool in summer. Sensors in the streets are monitoring traffic all day, and the information is sent to a central system that changes the traffic lights. As a result, pedestrians and cyclists seem much safer than they were in the old city centre. Cycle paths connect the neighbourhood to the metro station, and a card reader on every bus allows passengers to pay in seconds. The town is also becoming greener, because solar panels on rooftops provide most of the electricity that the buildings need. Nevertheless, some residents feel uneasy about the amount of personal information that the system collects. Privacy remains a serious issue, and the city council is now thinking about stricter rules to protect residents' data. Urban designers also worry that technology may weaken the sense of community, since people can order everything online and rarely meet their neighbours. To solve this problem, the council has built parks and shared kitchens where families can interact and organise festivals. Experts believe that the best future cities will be those that combine clever technology with real human contact.
