Life expectancy in Viet Nam has risen steadily since the 1980s, which shows how much modern medicine and better living conditions have helped people. However, doctors warn that young people who give up regular exercise and rely on fast food are putting their long-term health at risk. Dr Linh Pham, a nutrition researcher, has studied the diets of more than two thousand students over the past five years. She found that students who ate a balanced diet, including fresh vegetables and protein-rich ingredients, rarely missed school because of illness. By contrast, those who skipped breakfast and drank sugary drinks every day often felt tired and found it hard to concentrate. According to Dr Pham, exercise is just as important as nutrition. Twenty minutes of press-ups, star jumps or a quick workout builds muscle and strength, and it also keeps the heart working properly. Hygiene matters too, because germs such as bacteria and viruses spread easily in crowded classrooms. Washing hands before meals can prevent an infection that would otherwise take days to treat. Dr Pham also reminds families that an antibiotic is effective against bacteria but useless against a virus, so it should never be taken without a doctor's advice. In the 1950s, tuberculosis killed thousands of people in Viet Nam, but vaccines and better treatment have since brought the disease under control. Dr Pham believes that the same progress is possible today if students cut down on junk food and work out regularly. "Nobody can guarantee a perfect life," she says, "but healthy habits give every person a better chance of living a long and active one."
