Can We Trust the News?

299 từ7 câu hỏi
Fifty years ago, most people learned about the world through newspapers, radio and television, which together formed the traditional mass media. Today the situation is so different that many teenagers never buy a newspaper at all. News now spreads so quickly on social networks that a story can reach millions of viewers within minutes. This instant access is convenient, but it also causes serious problems, because anyone can post information as if it were a fact. Fake news has become such a concern that several governments have introduced new rules to stop it. Experts explain that false stories often look as though they come from a credible source, with a professional logo and a serious tone. The press, as opposed to many websites, usually has editors who check each report before it is published. By contrast, a post on a personal account may be written in a hurry and may reflect the author's bias. Meanwhile, television stations broadcast live events with audio and images, so viewers feel as if they were present. Advertisers have also changed their methods: digital billboards and interactive adverts follow people across their screens. Many companies think of publicity as an investment, because a single popular video can account for a large share of their sales. However, not every offer is honest; some adverts promise a big discount that disappears when customers click. To protect themselves, readers should fact-check a story by comparing at least two reliable sources. They should also look at the date, because an old report may be shared again as if it were new. Schools are therefore teaching media skills so well that students can often spot a suspicious headline in seconds. In the end, the mass media are only as good as the people who produce, distribute and read them.
