Breaking the Stereotypes
220 từ6 câu hỏi
For many years, certain jobs were considered suitable only for men, while others were thought to belong to women. Today, this attitude can be challenged by looking at the achievements of famous women. Valentina Tereshkova, a Soviet cosmonaut, became the first woman in space in 1963 after she had trained as a parachutist. Her success showed that physical courage must not be judged by gender. In Viet Nam, many hospitals are led by skilful female surgeons, and their operations have saved thousands of patients. Meanwhile, men can be seen working as kindergarten teachers and secretaries, and nobody should be surprised by this. Nevertheless, equality has not been reached everywhere. In some remote areas, girls cannot be sent to school because their families think that education is more valuable for boys. As a result, many of these girls grow up uneducated and have fewer chances to find good jobs. Domestic violence is another serious issue, and victims must be protected by the law and treated with respect. Campaigners say that employers should offer the same salary to men and women who do the same work. They also believe that children ought to be taught from an early age that no job is only for one gender. Only when these ideas are accepted by everyone can a society truly be called equal.
